What is Software and Why we use it?

What is Software?

• Software is nothing but a tool which is used in computer or on any device to operate that machine and to complete complex tasks easily within less amount of time without letting you concern about complicated steps involved in the process.

• Software is nothing but a bundle or collection of lots of programmed files (every file consist some task to perform when software get run) which has some instruction set which tells the computer to execute certain task or complete the task.

• Software is a virtual entity not a physical entity; we can watch it, operate it with the help of hardware like mouse, keyboard etc.

What are the types of Software ?

Types of software has shown below diagrammatically:

Software has two major Types :

1. System Software 
2. Application Software

1) System Software : 

• System software were created with intention to operate machines like Computers.
• Example of such system software are divided in 4 categories which briefed below:

1. Operating Software:- 

• It's nothing but an operating system which allows you to communicate with computers or any machine.

• Computer can not run without operating system. It allows you to run different kinds of software and complete your task on machine.
• It creates Environment on Machine to execute different tasks.

• Example of it :- Microsoft Windows, Linux, Mac Os.

     2.  Language Processor:- 

• It is a type of software which is used to translate or convert programs written in a programming language to machine language.

    3. Utility software :-  

• Utility software are used and designed with the intent of  cleaning of computer junk files.
• Example of such utility software are :- Disk Cleanup, antivirus etc.

           4. Device driver :- 

• These software programs are used to communicate with different hardware connected to machine.

2) Application Software:-  

• Application Software's are used to perform  user specific task in a computer.
• For example we can consider Microsoft office is installed on computer OS to complete different tasks such as writing file, making power point presentation , creating excel sheets and so on. These tasks can get accomplished with the help of Application Software's.

• It has 2 types :

1. General Purpose Application Software:- 
• It comes in picture when we think of  fulfilling general needs and requirements of a huge number of people.

• Example of such software is Microsoft Office.

2. Specific Purpose Application Software :-  
• These types of software are developed by keeping in mind specific requirements of organization or company.We can also called them customized software's.

• Example of such software is Company's Payroll software, Inventory System.
